Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. These muscles are collectively referred to as the pelvic floor.

The pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in various bodily functions, such as bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and supporting the pelvic organs. Pelvic floor physiotherapy aims to assess, diagnose, and treat conditions related to these muscles, often due to issues like pelvic pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or pain during intercourse. Please book with one of our pelvic health practitioners if you are seeking help for incontinence, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, menopausal heath, post-surgical pelvic rehabilitation, bowel dysfunction, endometriosis, persistent low back or hip pain, tailbone pain, post c-section, post-partum, pregnancy related pain or any other condition where you believe a pelvic exam might be warranted.

Here are some common aspects of pelvic floor physiotherapy:

Assessment: A thorough assessment is conducted to evaluate the strength, tone, and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. This may involve internal examination (with the patient's consent) to assess muscle function directly.

Treatment: Based on the assessment findings, a treatment plan is developed to address specific issues. Treatment may include exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles, manual therapy techniques, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, and education on lifestyle modifications.

Education: Patients are educated about their pelvic anatomy and how to properly engage and relax their pelvic floor muscles. This education can help in improving symptoms and preventing future issues.

Management: Pelvic floor physiotherapists work closely with patients to manage conditions such as urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic pain syndromes, and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Preventive Care: They also provide guidance on preventive measures to maintain pelvic floor health, such as correct posture, proper lifting techniques, and exercises to support pelvic floor function.

Overall, pelvic floor physiotherapy aims to improve quality of life by addressing pelvic floor dysfunction through a combination of targeted exercises, manual therapy, and patient education. It's a specialized field that requires specific training and expertise in treating pelvic floor disorders.
